When you declare S/U on a module, a passing letter grade (C or higher in NUS/SMU, D or higher in NTU) is converted to 'S' (Satisfactory). You earn full modular credits toward graduation, but the grade point is completely excluded from your cumulative CAP calculation.
As a general rule, you should S/U any eligible module whose grade point is strictly lower than your current or target cumulative CAP. For example, if your CAP is 4.20, a grade of B (3.50) or B- (3.00) drags down your average and should usually be S/Ued.
At NUS, freshmen receive up to 32 MC of S/U credits in Year 1, with up to 12 MC carried forward into subsequent years for Level 1000/2000 modules without prerequisites. NTU allows up to 12 AU for Broadening and Deepening Electives (BDEs).
Both NUS and NTU require a cumulative CAP/GPA of 4.50 or higher (out of 5.00) at graduation. At SMU, the equivalent Latin honour Summa Cum Laude requires a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher (out of 4.0/4.3).
