What is BMI?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple mathematical formula used globally by health professionals to estimate whether a person has a healthy body weight for a given height. Developed in the 19th century by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet, it is designed as a quick screening tool for populations, not a diagnostic tool for individuals.
The BMI Formula
Calculating your BMI is straightforward if you know your exact height and weight.

For example, a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 meters tall has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 22.86.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the standard adult BMI categories as follows:

BMI for Asians (Adjusted Cutoffs)
Medical research has shown that populations of Asian descent tend to accumulate visceral fat (dangerous belly fat) at lower BMI levels than Caucasian populations. Therefore, they have a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at a "normal" standard BMI. Many health organizations in Asia use adjusted cutoffs:
- Normal weight: 18.5 - 22.9
- Overweight: 23.0 - 24.9
- Obesity: 25.0 and above
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is incredibly useful for studying large populations, it has major flaws when applied to individuals:
- It Doesn't Distinguish Muscle from Fat: A heavily muscled athlete (like a bodybuilder or NFL player) will often register as "Obese" on the BMI scale because muscle is dense and heavy, even though their body fat percentage is very low.
- It Doesn't Measure Fat Distribution: Fat stored around the waist (visceral fat) is far more dangerous to heart health than fat stored around the hips or thighs (subcutaneous fat). BMI cannot tell where your fat is located.
- Age and Bone Density: Older adults tend to lose muscle mass and bone density, meaning a "normal" BMI might actually hide a dangerously high body fat percentage (a condition known as normal-weight obesity).
Alternatives to BMI
If you want a more accurate picture of your metabolic health, consider these alternatives:
- Body Fat Percentage: Measured via DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing, or bioelectrical impedance scales. Healthy ranges are typically 10-22% for men and 20-32% for women.
- Waist-to-Height Ratio (WtHR): A simple and highly effective metric. Your waist circumference should be less than half of your height (a ratio of 0.5 or lower).
- Waist Circumference: Men should aim for less than 40 inches (102 cm) and women less than 35 inches (88 cm) to reduce cardiovascular risk.
